How do I prove that I am unmarried?

It's also called single status Certificate

Unmarried Certificate is generally issued to certify that a man or woman has reached the age of 20 years old and has not yet married. Since the Muluki civil code, 2074 of Nepal defines any marriage occurring before the age of 20 as a voidable marriage, an unmarried certificate is required only after reaching the age of 20.

The unmarried certificate ( single status certificate) is a vital legal document in Nepal used to prove that an individual is currently not married. 


What types of work is this certificate required for?

1- Foreign Employment and study Visas.

2- For court Marriage

3- If you plan to get married in foreign country.

4. For National ID Card

5. Property Transactions and Partition.

6. Many International and domestic scholarship programs

7. DV and Immigration processes

8.Legal and court proceedings.

9. For Family Pension Claim: If a pension holder death, their Unmarried daughters may be eligible to receive the family pension. This certificated is mandatory to prove her eligibility.

10. Government and military Service

11. Claiming Insurance and Gratuity.

12. Bank Loans and other banking Work.

 

Note: An unmarried certificate is required for various purposes. It should be issued in Nepali for domestic use: but, for Foreign purposes, it must be issued in English or translated into English by a Notary public.  


Where to go?

The primary office for this service is your Ward office.

  • The Ward office that mentioned in your citizenship.
  • If you have officially migration to a new location, visit the Ward office of your current residence. (Migration certificate is mandatory)

 

Required documents:

1. Application latter ( The template for the application is provided in the word file below)

2. Citizenship ( Photocopy)

3. National ID Number

4. Parent's Citizenship (photocopies)

5. Migration certificate ( if the applicant has moved from their original permanent address)

6. Recent passport size photo 2 copy

7. If this is for international use passport copy.

8. Self- Declaration of single status.

  • The application must be submitted to the ward office staff along with these documents.
  • The ward office can ensure accuracy, The office can Verify the previous Marriage record.
  • The office may also conduct field inquiry ( sthalgat Muchulka) to verify the status. 
  • In some Case , family members may be required to visit the office for official Verification ( sanakhat) to confirm that the information is true.

 

Key Details: Authentication: After Verifying all documents, the ward secretary proceeds with the process. - ward chairperson or the designated official signs and it affixes the ward seal, the certificate legal validity. It can be issued in both Nepali or English language on the base of required.

 

How Long does it take?

Generally, you can get an unmarried certificate on the same day. within 1 to 3 hours if yours documents are ready.

If the ward office decide to conduct a field inquiry (Muchulka) or if the authorize officials are out of the office, it may take 1 to 2 working day.

Fee: The Fee is determined according to the financial act of the local Government. however, in general.

  • For Domestic purpose: NPR 300
  • For use in SAARC countries: NPR 500
  • For use in other Foreign countries: NPR 1,000.

 

Is it available? Unmarried certificated can get online?

No, a fully online unmarried certificate is not available in nationwide, However, some urban municipalities like kathamandu, lalitpur, dhangadi try to start particle online facilities. 

 

Why it is not online?

The process involves local verification, document verification, field inquiry, signature, and seal if mandatory for legal validity. 


How long is the unmarried certificate valid?

The validity of unmarried certificate is depends on its purpose.

Note: For international use the unmarried certificate must be attested by the Department of counselor services, Ministry of Foreign affairs in Kathamandu. It is located in Tripureshwor, Kathamandu.

Attestation fee: Near about NPR 500-1,000


Different Types of unmarried Certificates.

1. Widow/ Widower Certificate ( After spouse' death) If a person ( Male or Female) was previous married and their spouse has died and the death certificate has been officially registered, the ward office issues a recommendation that: No Second marriage has been registered from the date of the spouse death until today's date.

This type of certificate is required for:

  • Applying for social security allowance
  • For Registering a new/ second marriage.
  • The Same Provision also applies in the case of divorce.
  • The fee is same as mentioned earlier.

 This certificate is issued as the under of Local Government operation act, 2074.
